We did it!

Jeremy, Jess, Megan and Laura set out July 31, 2011 to hike Segment 12 of the Colorado Trail. 18.5 official miles (with some additional side trips) and 4 days later, we finished the hike and made our way off the trail.

With a base camp in Denver, CO (thanks Heather!) and Breckenridge, CO (Thanks to Marc and Susan!) we did some hikes to acclimate ourselves to the altitude. We hiked the Royal Arches in Boulder and McCullough Gulch outside Breck.

Check out some pictures of our hikes:

All told, with monies raised by those who were unable to hike included, we raised over $10,00o for breast cancer research.

Hiking Colorado and Megan in the news

The Wilmot Cancer Center is a department of the University of Rochester Medical Center. It is a multi disciplinary center that prides itself in offering a team approach in cancer care. As members of subspecialty teams, oncology physicians and staff from all cancer and diagnostic specialties regularly collaborate in multidisciplinary disease site conferences. Information about the patient's type and stage of cancer is presented and a consensus opinion about treatment options developed. This collaborative and collective assembly of expertise from a variety of perspectives ensures that patients receive the best possible advice for treatment from the beginning of their journey.

And, since the Wilmot Cancer Center is a part of a leading academic medical center, they are able to consult and collaborate with some of the best subspecialists in other non-cancer fields.

In addition to providing recommendations for the most up-to-date treatment, patients are screened for eligibility to participate in clinical trials. In offering this option to patients, the Wilmot Cancer Center again demonstrates their commitment to bring the newest and most advanced treatment to patients and their families.

One of the greatest breakthroughs in cancer prevention has its origins in research done by three virologists at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Richard Reichman, M.D., William Bonnez, M.D., and Robert Rose, Ph.D., discovered a method to protect against several strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), including those that cause the most prevalent forms of cervical cancer.

Breast Cancer in the news

"Low vitamin D levels among women with breast cancer correlate with more aggressive tumors and poorer prognosis, according to a new University of Rochester Medical Center study highlighted this week at the American Society of Breast Surgeons meeting in Washington, D.C.

The study is one of the first to examine vitamin D and breast cancer progression. Previous research has focused on vitamin D deficiency and the risk of cancer development. The URMC epidemiology study associates sub-optimal vitamin D levels with poor scores on every major biological marker that helps physicians predict a patient’s breast cancer outcome."

How do we follow this up?

We are tossing around several ideas for Summer 2012, anywhere from hiking to rafting or biking. Any ideas? Want to join us? Let us know.
